I've used old CDs around the edges of pots (just pushed into the soil facing inwards) and that seems to have put off the blackbirds. Not sure if it is because they don't like reflections or that they can't stand on the edges and throw all the soil out looking for worms, but it has worked!
Other than full netting (including a roof), not found anything that works for sparrows yet. I just make sure it's taut net and check it regularly.
They also don't seem to like being run at by the slightly crazed gardener.
