The grubs eat the roots, esp during autumn and winter, but they don't take bites out of the leaves.
The adults would, but they aren't around during the winter, when these plants were attacked

I think something has had a go at the rotting leaves - slugs imo

It was Vine Weevil I was concerned about when I dug them up. I carefully sifted through the mpc looking for grubs or adults but found none.
The attached picture shows the bite marks. The bites where generally not quite as big as pictured.
I have never found any slugs or snails in the garden to date.
So far I've had leaf miners on my Brassicas which are about 4m away from the strawbs and scale insects chomping my bay and privet leaves last autumn, about 5m from the strawbs.
