    Hello
    has anybody got any advice on which eating apple would do well on the coast in the Southwest?
    We have a very windy garden and are only 500 meters from the sea.

    we would want a small tree, any idea which rootstock to get?
    thanks

    Certainly, most apple varieties will not thrive in such a situation - especially avoid the types that fill the supermarket shelves, which tend to be prone to disease.

    You ought to be looking for varieties with very strong resistance to both scab and canker.
    Varieties which "hang well on the tree" would also be beneficial.

    I live in a rather different climate, but I'd suggest looking at the following varieties:

    Alfriston
    Annie Elizabeth
    Belle de Boskoop
    Brownlees Russet
    Cockle Pippin
    Crawley Beauty
    D'Arcy Spice
    Early Victoria
    Egremont Russet
    Golden Noble
    Grenadier
    Reverend Wilks

    Others which might also do well include:
    Cornish Aromatic
    Lane's Prince Albert
    Lord Derby
    Merton Russet
    Newton Wonder
    Rosemary Russet
    Winston

    The following may help select the ideal rootstock for your tree, which takes into account the variety, rootstock and soil:
    > Tree size estimator <

    I would consider your soil to be at least average, given the plentiful rainfall.
    Talking very rough numbers (which vary with soil and the variety grafted):
    M26 = 8ft
    MM106 = 11ft
    MM111 = 13ft
    M25 = 16ft
    .
