Melons

Got a very small melon on a spindly Sweetheart plant, went in too late - will try next year.

am sooooooooo jealous well actually I'm quite happy cos my plants actually managed more than two leaves this year so .....bearing that in mind I will try again next year in the hopes that there are more than two leaves and maybe even some flowers

Well with lots of tweeking - stopped the plant, took off other teeny fruit, removed flowers...I got one Sweetheart melon to ripen - just. Not sure if they are all this size, seemed a bit small? Taste wasn't bad, but not great - still better than a lot of shop bought! One melon would make a small snack I think.

Looks good, glad it tasted nice smallblueplanet! Got three to ripen (two very undersize though) before the plants all succumbed to mildew along with the rest of the garden.

Unfortunately they took so long to ripen with the naff weather that the sugars were low and the fruit was kinda tasteless/inedible. Doh! Smelt nice though!

i must admit,i dont fuss with the melons,they are started in a pot ,put in the border when big enough,trained to the frame then let get on with it,hand pollinate with a childs paintbrush and have a cut-off bit of OHs tights tied to the frame to support it,fed the same as toms,the old neighbour who helped me start off and my grandad both said"dont fuss with them,they have been growing for eons,just give good conditions and let them get on with it" and as my grandad brought up 11kids he didnt have time to "fuss" over veg in the garden....works for me,all the rain & dark clouds,still manged to ripen 4 melons,not the dozen we usually get,but acceptable this "summer"..
