Are we still talking about melons?
I'm growing four plants, 2 in my cold frame and 2 in the greenhouse. I'm going to pinch out the tips to hopefully get four shoots on each plant and one melon per shoot. Any other flowers will be pinched out so the plants can focus their attention.
This is my first bash at melons so please someone let me know if this sounds crazy.
Growing Canteloupe F1 Sweetheart as it's meant to mature early.
Fingers crossed X

I've grown lots of cantaloupe melons, and several types, over the years (in a cold greenhouse). Sweetheart have always done well, even in years when I neglected them (i.e. didn't have time for training, pinching out, and hand pollinating).
In years when I did have time Hearts of Gold, Edonis and others who's names I've forgotten never gave me 4-fruit-per-plant as promised in the seed catalogues!
I've grown water melon once, but it was a year of neglected growing, so they never really had a chance, but I decided we didn't really like Water Melon THAT much, so haven't bothered to try again.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

In previous years I've failed with Sugar Baby and Blacktail.
This year I failed with Minnesota Midget.
(sowed too early and they just got unhappy.)
Not sure whether to try again with a fresh sowing...
My thought is that a nice cucumber is just as tasty and juicy as a melon and has the advantage of thriving in in England.

I grew tham at a chum's place a couple of years ago and we had about 20 off three plants, between 2 families.
I actually bought two plants yesterday, one is a graft and the other non-grafted, same type, just to experiment with and to see whether the current fad for grafting makes any difference. The plants will go into one of my half metre square planting boxed, some soil broken up in the bottom, some home made compost and lots of fresh hoss poo and I'm growing them up the fruit arch and if they fruit, will have the melons in net bags.
If they get too big, don't want them heading southTonyF, Dordogne 24220
