This thread was SO worth it - if just for a shot of Scarey's Melons. Nice one.

Just been out in the garden (to take photos for my 'hole in tomato' thread) and also took some pics of my melons :-)

Oh, really well done, they look great.
Mine are nothing like that but I'm so chuffed to have one melon. I have been thinking about putting one of the plants outside but I'm still a bit scared!

Many thanks! I'd love to take credit, but I suspect it's my environment rather than my efforts.

Bet they're larger than my melons.

The plants are currently languishing (they still hate me) at all under 6 inches tall.

Don't get a complex Perkin, I think I just got lucky with the wonderful April and May weather and I did plant them on 23rd March so they've had ages to get to this size.

It took a lot of patience taking them in and out of the blowaway for a couple of months but it has been worth it

I aimed seeds at compost, waited until 1st set of true leaves, then threw them at the ground and ignored them (apart from to throw them about a bit to weed under them).

You all hate me now, don't you? ;-)

I'd reply, but it's taking too much energy just to hate you.

good to hear that its not just me who struggles to grow melons!the first year I tried I cut off all the laterals thinking it was like a cucumber..still managed to get delicious, if not rather small fruit. the smell in the greenhouse was wonderful.
Trying 'out door wonder' also this year and growing some watermelons (sown from the pips of a tennisball sized one from last year) in a coldframe....don't really rate their chances!!!

i grow sweetheart and ogen types each year in the g/house,sharing with the toms, onthe right one year,on the left the next year, then change all the soil, from 3 plants we get 10 -12 fruit, treated the same as toms ,but a little less water, grown up a double H shaped frame to support their weight, cut from the plant and served straight away, smell and taste is superb!!!!!

Well, the sorry story is this.

I went into the greenhouse tonight and lo and behold, the melon had turned and the greenhouse smelt lovely.

I went to cradle my melon and......[can you guess?]....

You've inspired me - I'm going to sneak one into the OH's very sunny greenhouse and pretend it is a "fun" new variety of passionflower.
