  • Fruit Bushes

    Hello,
I have just joined and would like some advice please. I live in Central Scotland (Kinross-shire) and I haven't grown a thing yet except herbs and some garlic. Was thinking about growing some fruit bushes in part of my garden while I wait for hubby to rotovate the proposed veg plot. I was thinking of some gooseberries, blueberries. and blackcurrants but am open to suggestions as to which may or may not do well in my area. Is it true that in Scotland you can add a month on to all the suggested planting times. I have quite good loamy soil and when I soil tested it said slightly acidic. Waiting in anticipation for all the good advice. Oh, and the area I propose to put the fruit bushes in is gently sloping and south / south/west facing so plenty sun.

Lots of Scottish grapes here on the Vine, Anney - so I'm sure they will be able to help you! Just wanted to say Hi and welcome - enjoy your gardening!

The gooseberries and blackcurrants should thrive. Blueberries will need to be planted in ericaceous compost as I wouldn't think your soil will be acidic enough unless you take steps to make it so! (There was a thread on blueberries if my memory serves me right!)

Good, that will be the same as moving your garden 30 miles south!

Blueberries like a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, if that helps.

I think you'll do very well
