What to look for in a healthy fruit tree at the garden centre?

Having never bought any type of fruit trees from a garden centre I am wondering what are the things to look out for in a healthy plum tree at the garden centre? I'm getting two Czar variety plum trees for a relative as a present and would like some help picking a healthy plant.
