  • Advice re Fruit Bushes

Over the last 2 years we have planted red and blackcurrant bushes and several gooseberries on our allottment. Currently they are covered in new buds. Each autumn we have pruned them. The plants appear to have thrived but have yet to produce any fruit.

    Is this normal?

Can we give them any encouragement?

    Advice gratefully received.

Maybe you are pruning too enthusiastically? Gooseberries and currants generally produce fruit on stems that grew the year before. Hence, if you are pruning these shoots away you won't get any fruit. There are several good books which provide pruning guides, or you can look up on-line
