each year our williams pear blossoms and small fruit appear, but then they go mouldy and drop off ,the leaves seem healthy and even here there seems no sign of canker on any of the stems, havent been able to check this weekas the weather has been rain, rain, and more rain,i have planted a conference and a concorde to help it,but they are only young yet and there will be no fruit on them this year as they build up their root systems,is it caused by the amount of rain? any ideas?......

My best guess would be that the fruits are being damaged by scab, which, in severe attacks, can make the fruit furry on the surface, or split and rot.
Initially, the scab would appear as black-brown spots that gradually get larger.
Not many pears have much tolerance of wet weather diseases such as scab or canker - and "Up North" is particularly challenging.
Williams has no special resistance to anything. The resistance of Conference is failing, due to "everybody" growing it and the diseases slowly adapting to parasitise such a large number of trees of the same type across the UK.
You could consider the old pear variety "Hessle", which is one of the most tolerant of cold and wet and is one of the few that have been known to thrive in the North. It is reasonably self-fertile.
Even here in the dry East, I've lost a handful of pears to canker in the past.
Pears simply don't like the high rainfall and/or the high humidity in the British Isles and it can be difficult to sustain an organic or spray-free pear tree in many parts of the UK.Last edited by FB.; 21-05-2011, 06:23 PM..

I'd love to see summer come to an end quickly and the cooler and wetter autumn weather arrive, to give the poor plants a chance to recover.
You list your location as "rain central". I'm thinking of listing mine as "drought central"..
