Raspberry reminder

Hi all, starting a new thread if that's ok...

my raspberry canes (newly planted in late October, instructions said to cut down to 18", but they were that long anyway, so I left them) are now starting to show leaves - I'm sure I read somewhere on the Vine when this happens, to cut the old cane down to X inches (1", 2", ground level?) so that the plant puts its energy into growing new canes instead of the old one.

I have had a good search, and can't find the thread where it was mentioned

One of trhe gardening programmes tonight said to cut back the old wood on Autumn fruiting raspberries, they grow again from the ground. Don't know about summer fruiting though when there are shoots.

Wait for the new suckers to start to show then take out the old stems at ground level for autumn varieties and newly planted summer ones.

DO NOT cut down last years stems on established summer varieties or you will have no fruit this year.

thank you both. No new suckers showing yet, only the one original cane I put in last Autumn. Guess I'll wait a couple of weeks

Sorry- can you tell me how i know if they are autumn or summer fruiting as mine were given to me and I have no idea!

as far as I'm aware (just based on what I've read here & in books etc) you will have to wait & see what fruits & when this year. I very, VERY stupidly put all mine in thinking I'd be able to remember what went where ( got 6 canes each of early, middle & autumn) and of course, 5 months on, I can't. So I'll be doing the same, and this time putting a tag on each plant!

Have been kicking self for several months.

(Mind you, they were delivered the morning we were going on holiday, it was early November and chucking it down, freezing cold, so my main aim was to get them in ASAP and go home to warm up!!)

I do find raspberries very confusing, I've just read a book where it said to pull up the suckers growing around the central canes (summer raspberries) is this right? I thought this was how the plants grew?? I've got Polka Primocanes that were planted last spring.
