  • Blackcurrant fruit splitting

    Evening everyone,
I have noticed that a great deal of the fruit on my blackcurrant bushes is showing signs of splitting. The skin seems to have torn exposing the seeds inside.
We have had torrential rain over the weekend, and I was wondering if the bushes have drawn in more water that the skin can handle.
    Any thoughts?

Quite probably what you suspect: too much water all at once

Got it in one Homer. Same thing tomatoes do when they've been starved of water and suddenly get a deluge. You need to get the splitting ones picked ASAP

Yup - as above: erratic water supply, especially if there has been a long dry spell followed by heavy rain.
The fruits swell too quickly and burst. It can be a problem for most types of fruit, but is worst with the summer-ripening types.
The best way to limit the problem in future is good mulching (to retain moisture) and not letting the soil dry too much - this then causes more even growth of the fruits, rather than a sudden rush to grow when water finally comes available.
          .
