  • Grape Vine

Hi there, after the success of my blueberry bush (the results will be shown on my blog, the link to which can be found in my signature beneath) I have decided to potentially expand into another avenue of fruit trees: grapes.

I am, however, looking for the following qualities in a grape vine and need help to identify these properties:
    • Seedless
    • Eating, not wine making.
    • Purple in colour
    • Vigorous vertical growth (i.e. able to grow to 8 foot and then branch out horizontal arms)
    • Tolerance to temperatures typical of cold UK winters
    • High Yielding and of sweet taste

I can appreciate this is a large list, but my main concerns are vigorous growth, tolerance to temperature and seedless.

Vigorous growth, as I am wanting to grow it up and along the side of the house.
Tolerance to low temperatures - East Midlands weather in winter = cold.
Seedless, I dislike seeds in grapes.

Thanks for any and all advice, please feel free to contribute your own experiences and tips which are beneficial. If anyone could point me to some good advice on the internet for what needs to be done to prepare the area for good growth, or any general tips, I'll be most appreciative.

    Thanks,

    Chris.

What do you want them for? Eating or winemaking?

      Eating, most certainly.

EDIT: I'll update my original post with eating.

Well, I was at work today....I just get whatever Grapes are available in my area and plant them...and all mine are seeded....

Have you googled 'seedless eating grapes uk' or something to see what varieties meet your requirements?

Wikipedia says that grape is used in wine making.. and it has "some" success with being grown in the UK.

Black hamburg seems popular, but it does have seeds in.

                    Hi Garden Chris

I don't know that particular grape but have found this website - (they don't say whether it's seedless or not but for other grapes they mention seedless in their description, so I assume Regent does have seeds).

I am growing Black Hamburg grapes outside from cuttings given to me by a kind "grape" on this forum! And they are doing very well too.

Thanks for the responses guys, I think I'm going to try and grow the 'Flame' Variety, seedless and black. Just have to wait for the autumn before I plant it I think. I've been told they only do well when planted in such conditions? :S

EDIT: Does this one seem reasonable?
