Fruit Identification

Hello, I was wondering if anyone could help me identify this fruit. Thanks in advance.

How big are those 'things'?

I would say they that most are the size of a golf ball. Also, the flowers on this bush are red.

it might be a japanese quince, the fruits don't look very happy though...

But when ripe they have a sort of bergamot smell. Lovely grated with apples in a pie - but they are mega hard fruits. You can make a quince jelly, wine or quince leather. I think Google will supply you with recipes. They aren't ripe till quite late in the year though.
