we have lost our pineapple bush(yellow flowered) thru the 2nd bitter winter, and as it is the centre of the big bed, SWMBO has said she wants something different,as we have apples, plums, pears, cherries etc,has anyone any ideas for a stand out (preferably fruiting) tree/shrub to make the focal point of that area?..

I would think so. They are bone hardy here.

i m trying to decide as the area is open to strong winter winds,i quite like the idea of a dual purpose apple,we had to lop the braeburn down to 1ft,(it was getting hammered by scab and possible canker) and i am now going to train its new shoots in a double U shape,i will keep it in a container and move it into g/house over winter.we really need one that can take the wet weather without succumbing to the first virus/blight that comes along, the soon to be empty coop area is to be covered with clear roofing and plastic sheeting on the sides, going to move my potted peach in there, plus nectarines etc, whatever i can grow under cover that tastes good,5m x3m should give me some choices..
