Plum Tree Growth

Hi

I brought a plum tree earier this year. I think it's the grafted sort. Following the instructions I cut the side shoots to 10 cm in July.

However since then the only new growth i've noticed is right at the bottom of the tree, where I have quite a few new shoots coming up through the soil - now about 30cm tall.

My question is should I dig up the soil and cut the new shoots where they are attached? I am concerned that all the growth is going into these new shoots rather than up the tree (so to speak).

Any advice much appreciated.

If it is grafted then you should definitely cut off the bottom shoots as this will be the root stock growth and not the grafted part which will give you the fruit you want.

Pull them off, rather that cutting them, if at all possible, this will help prevent them re-growing. Hopefully.

Many thanks for your suggestions - It sounds like they need to come of, which I guessed may be the case.

I brought it from B&Q, only a tenna so for that price thought it was worth a try - never grown a tree before!

Do you know how many years I will have to wait until fruit develops? Could I see any next year?

I agree with Glutton4. I was just reading about this the other day in my fruit book. Try and pull the shoots up rather than cut them off.

My plum tree started producing in its 2nd year ( 2 plums ) and has slowly moved on each year. I think it may have skipped a year now and then but last year we had 22lb of plums and this year we had 101lb. This doesnt include ones that ended up in the compost heap.

My tree is now approx 10 years old
