Badgers and plums

My plum tree is showings signs of recent damage to the lower leaves. There are lots of leaves and plums on the ground and broken branches. I can only think a large but short animal can have done this as there is no damage above about 2 feet. I'm thinking it is a badger, anyone else had the same problem?

A lady I garden for has muntjac deer come and eat her fruit on the trees - probably to about 4ft up the tree

I thought of muntjac, but I'm not sure that they have got as far North as the midlands yet.
