  • Raspberry canes

My canes for next year are lready between 8 - 10 ft tall. Can I cut them back to about 6 ft . will this reduse the amount of fruit I get or will it grow side shoots. Advice please.

It has two chances , up or down.

I cut mine down to about 5ft when I tie them in. They do grow up again and throw sideshoots which produce fruit.

You certainly can cut them back to a manageable size. The fruit will grow on sideshoots produced from the canes anyway.

Mine are also 8 to 10 foot high and I intend moving them to a better spot.

I will plant them as 'long canes' pruned to 5 foot, heavily mulched and tied into supported wires.

This will give me a crop next year.

I know it works because the harvest I've had this year was from long canes planted last year.

Thanks for that. I didn't want to loose next years crop but they are just getting out of hand.

Raspberries are very hardy and from my experience even the blackest of thumbs can't kill them.
