Currant bushes growing new buds!

Sorry - I have so many questions today! I went to the lottie today with the intention of pruning my currant and gooseberry bushes, only to find that two of the currant bushes are already covered with new buds. (I think they are blackcurrants but could be redcurrants) Have I left it too late to prune them? It seems cruel to cut them back when they are trying to burst into new life!
