  • Andi Clevely suggests in Febs Mag Stacking

Just read this article in Feb edition re stacking of produce bu using fruit trees as canopy layer, then soft fruit bushes below with rhubarb or perennial veg underplanting . Any ideas which soft fruit would be suitable, have you tried this ? It's taken me a year to clear rubbish at back of plot, still some old carpet yet to go and 2 of the trees are in very poor condition but I need to use space more efficiently. Advice appreciated.

I haven't seen the article yet but these are the principles of Forest Gardening/ Permaculture You should put the tallest trees along the back border (north) and plant the underlying plants on the sunny side (south). You could use standard fruit trees, with dwarfing fruit trees alongside, then taller fruit bushes (raspberries, blackcurrants etc), then smaller fruit bushes, rhubarb and strawberries beneath. The essential is that no plant should grow in the shadow of its neighbour. Try this for start Forest Gardening agroforestry
