  • Over wintering potted fruit trees

I have some newly potted fruit trees.

I could put bubble wrap around the pots and store them in a sheltered place outside - but is it also an option to leave them in the garage and keep the soil damp? which would be best?

They should be ok outside do long as there isn't a hard frost but if it looks like a cold spell is on the cards, take them under cover till it passes.

In the UK and Bulgaria i leave all my fruit trees in pots outside with no protection ( not citrus ones! ) , the compost often freezes in the pots , it causes no problems

The only time i bring them in (in the UK) is occasionaly the peach trees to make them flower earlier to get ripe fruit easier, if apricot trees flower early i chuck a cloth over them ,

in Bulgaria all my fruit trees including the peaches are growing in the ground and the cold / frost doesnt seem to hurt them and it gets much much colder in the winter and spring , at the minute its about -15C

My potted apple and gage stay outside, I move them next to the side of the house which is quite sheltered, but I've never fleeced them (they're 3 years old) and they have been fine.

Much too dark in a garage, plants need daylight and lots of it
