it's not a bargain if they are dead. I bought 2 gooseberries, a blueberry, a redcurrant, a blackcurrant and two raspberries from the £ store last year. Everything, with the possible exception of the redcurramt (and I may be living in hope here) is dead. £7 could have bought me a decent blueberry in a pot from a garden centre, or quite a few raspberry canes from a nursery. I won't be fooled again.

salome2001, i always make sure that they bushes have some buds/growth and roots on them before buying them, that way if the die i know its my fault. at the end of the day ive bought some great plants from wilkos and other shops, for example i bought a fig tree from wilkos last year and it has shot-up! - by the way im not saying that them dying is you fault!

I bought a cranberry at Wilkos recently, but I had to take all of the plants out of their boxes before I found one that didn't look dried out and shriveled. I would have bought more otherwise. They had other soft fruit that looked very healthy - but not the sort I wanted.

Thats the only problem with soft fruit bushes from stores, they get neglected and dry out so quick. At least the fruit trees are well packaged in that black cling film stuff to keep the moisture in.

I caused a bit of disruption in Aldis's looking for the right trees ........growing the apple and pear as cordons so they had to look right AND have buds . Didn't think I ought to whip out my knife and do a scrape test tho' .......

That black cling film stuff was on the cranberry too. I know because I planted it out today and it took for ever to unwind. The roots were about half the depth of the soil ball - so the deep hole that I dug was rather a waste of effort!

Its amazing what does! Its always worth giving someone else's tree a quick prune. Sound knowledgeable enough and they'll believe its doing their tree good - and thank you for it!

Wrap it in fleece to protect the fruitlets. Hope it's inside? Mine are in an unheated greenhouse, but are wrapped.
Bought a lovely looking lemon today, with five huge fruits on. Had to climb over rock salt to get to the back.
