Could you take a pic of the buds in focus? I think it looks like a quince myself

        Ello again!

right - sorry will have to get a more infocus pic tomorrow - HOWEVER I did pick and squeeze the buds, they are pale green inside (looks like little leaves etc...) but it smelled very strongly of cat wee/gooseberry - definitely a fruity smell...(my friend says it smells a bit like cannabis (but I couldnt possibly comment)

Any more ideas - anything smell of catwee that we can identify?!

        Cheers so far!

Ornamental currant? Ribes sanguineum I think. I hate the smell, exactly like cat's wee and even worse when its wet! - Hate box for the same reason!

I have been wondering...... You could cut a bit off and put it in water indoors and see what the bud turns into.

if it is flowering currant, taking it in the house will be like introducing twenty incontinent cats

Its the acid test, AP. Personally, I wouldn't have a Ribes Pongerificum in the garden, let alone in the house!

Rub them off. You don't need to take it up. Then fleece it!

The picture is very shaded, which prevents being able to clearly see the colour and texture of the bark - which could be an instant tell-tale.

Once it has leaves or flowers, it will be much easier to identify than while it's a virtually lifeless twig.

I think the best thing is to sit and wait it out. See what happens and then let us know.
