For the best results choose a south facing aspect. If that isn't possible, choose the aspect with as much south as you can, or the aspect with the least shade. Watch out for large trees that will cast a shadow and cut back any that you can to increase exposure to the sun. My own garden is west south west, so misses the early morning sun, and my neighbour has an oak and a Leylandi. Nevertheless, I usually get a good crop of gooseberries and cherry plums. Have put in a cherry tree and apple this year, and next year will be putting in vines.
Pots are a mixed blessing. They will never do as well as fruit in the ground but you will be able to move them in out of the frost, so there's a bit of swings and roundabouts. You are probably on the right track starting them in pots, but don't delay in putting them in the ground once they are established. Remember that as long as they are in pots they will require reqular watering. When you plant them out they will continue to require regular watering until the roots are established.
Best of luck.
