For the best results choose a south facing aspect. If that isn't possible, choose the aspect with as much south as you can, or the aspect with the least shade. Watch out for large trees that will cast a shadow and cut back any that you can to increase exposure to the sun. My own garden is west south west, so misses the early morning sun, and my neighbour has an oak and a Leylandi. Nevertheless, I usually get a good crop of gooseberries and cherry plums. Have put in a cherry tree and apple this year, and next year will be putting in vines.

Pots are a mixed blessing. They will never do as well as fruit in the ground but you will be able to move them in out of the frost, so there's a bit of swings and roundabouts. You are probably on the right track starting them in pots, but don't delay in putting them in the ground once they are established. Remember that as long as they are in pots they will require reqular watering. When you plant them out they will continue to require regular watering until the roots are established.

    Best of luck.

      Thanks for your advice everyone

I am watering them daily (but taking care not to over water them - that's my usual problem!!)

So they should all be alright in the greenhouse for a bit then, until they get a bit bigger and I can trust the stupid weather (huge hailstones again today) to behave!

May post pics of my progress (or lack of, we'll see how I go!)

      Thanks again

What size pots? And daily watering is not necessarily a good idea - better to give a good soak and then wait till the pot feels light before watering again. If you give them a little sprinkle every day then only the top of the compost will be moist so the roots will stay near the surface.

That IS overwatering, unless you're having a heat wave

Lift the pots up: do they feel heavy, or light for their size? If they're heavy, put them back, they've got enough water. You'll soon get the hang of it

You can try that with bigger pots if you use gravel trays or the large plant saucers. Or even old dinner plates

Just wanted to say good luck from another Grape in Lincolnshire, I'm also going to try to get some fruit going on my new allotment.

Overwatering is as bad as underwatering, remember!

I'd only been giving them tiny amounts daily - as normally I give plants too much and kill them! But I see what you mean about it only moistening the top - I hadn't thought of that!!

I will give larger amounts less frequently then.

I also have a propagator inside, which I planted some seeds a week ago! The lettuce has just come up, its so cute! I'm trying to get round not over watering this by using a water spray, which seemed to be working. But will this only moisten the top bit of soil too?

              Thanks again
