  • Apple Tree question

Sorry if this is going over old ground but I have an apple tree growing the garden and the buds have gone hard & grey.

It was planted out 2 years ago, a hybrid type, and up until a few weeks ago it was budding lovely, now the buds are grey and hard but there is a new shoot coming up from the graft. This tree is planted up against a 3 foot fence and is part shade / sun, in clay soil.

There's another apple tree, the same type, planted at exactly the same time but in a different area of the garden which has blossom all over it. They have roughly the same amount of sunshine but at slightly different times of the day, the fence one probably gets an hour or two less, both clay soil.

Whats happened to the grey bud tree and do I have to do something to it. Cut it back or just leave it. I haven't scraped the bark on the existing branches to see if there's any life in them, I just noticed it wasn't doing much and had a quick look earlier.

Any info/ advice would be very appreciated.

    Thank you XX

P.S. Not mouldy. Very hard and dry, quite crispy.
