yeh i agree with you it does make the tree look awful - so i did spray it a few weeks ago with bug killer - luckily the cherry tree doesn't seem to be affected so far this year - and has lots of cherries on it
I had the same problem as you have and now the tree is dead. Cut back or peal the bark back ,if you see that its brown then you may have a canker . treet it now for that. see canker and viruses in plum. see open wounds or sap seeping from areas of the bark, . that will give a good indication of this disease .
Would be interesting to know how the trees are doing, after three years. The consensus back then was aphid damage, what makes you think differently. And Mr Peter is...?
