No fruit this year sounds biennial.
Nice eating apple also is helpful.
I wonder whether the variety is "Ben's Red".
From Cornwall, early 1800's.
Similar to Devonshire Quarrenden (a possible parent of Ben's Red).
Ripens September.
Red skin over yellow, medium-sized fruit.
Sometimes traces of pink in the flesh under the red skin.
Sweet with traces of strawberry/raspberry flavours.
Biennial cropping.
Fairly slow growing.
Roots from branches.
Fairly disease resistant
