  • Devastated Blackcurrents

    Hi Folks

Just been down to the allotment today, which i try to get to at this time of year at least every other day, and found my Blackcurrants absolutely devastated and full of whitefly not one on the Red or White Currants just on the Black
All the leaves have curled up and not a sign of any fruit in sight
I did not know that Blackcurrants were prone to whitefly infestation....It is so prolific that when i washed them off with the hose the soil underneath was white

I have obviously lost the crop for this year but for future years is there anything i can do to prevent it hapening again or if i notice it soon enough can i do anything to get rid of them

    Help.....John
    Cheers .... John

My blackcurrant are full of greenfly whereas my redcurrant which is next to it is free so it looks like aphids love that Ribena taste. I know that French Marigolds deter whitefly under glass but they may work outside as well so you could try that.

I am against spraying chemicals, so I'd just let nature take its course.

Quite possibly the blackcurrants have drawn all the attention and spared the whitecurrants and redcurrants from an attack, so I wouldn't hurry to dig them out and burn them because they failed to perform.

My old Dad used to use soapy water to control blackfly, seems to work and maybe not as "non PC" as the insecticide sprays.

Are you absolutely sure it was whitefly?
