Hmm I was in the nursery a few weeks ago and they only had male kiwi's left. Pity, altho as soon as we read the label which said 1 male to 6 females, I couldn't help thinking of VC with 7 of the beggars in the back garden!

Just one of the monsters here, Feral - its a self fertile Jenny! A few fruit have survived the massacre - but they're not enough to justify its continued existence - though I doubt that I can ever get rid of it completely without digging up half the garden.

            Remember this thug?

It had lots of fruit on it - however, this is what happened to it today

The kitchen is so much lighter without it I need to get as much of the root out as possible before it comes back to haunt me
Never again will I grow a kiwifruit - although I do have a Kiwiberry in a pot

I completely understand why you did that, veggiechicken, I'm tempted to do the same. Except that we have three plants that between them make a tunnel over 40 ft of path ( and a greenhouse and half a fruit cage). I think the pile of cut down kiwi would be bigger than our house

VC, I'm so glad I came across this post!! I bought a kiwi plant from homebase last year, it was dying off as most plants do there, and I bought it back to life - this year I had 3 fruits appear but only tiny - 2 dropped off the others still there but only the size a of a grape. I have LOADS of leaves but I keep mine in a pot as I don't want it as big as yours!!!
It says it's a self pollinating kiwi but how do I get more fruit? I don't do anything with it apart from water it, and it's south facing against a trellis. It's over 6foot high but I want FRUIT!!! Help please!

Mine was a Jenny and had no trouble setting fruit all on its ownsome. Its now buried under the GH but I do worry about it poking its head through the concrete

LOL!!! I think I'll just leave it alone and see what happens next year, I guess I could try it in the new GH I've bought next year?

Forgot to mention last year (2014, its back It must have wriggled its way out from under the concrete and emerged in the middle of the adjacent herb bed.
                      So I pulled it up.
Guess what? Its back again - about 4' tall in the middle of the mint

So what about the other 5 Actinidia plants you've grown or purchased this year - how are they doing?

The Kiwiberry, grown from seed, is twining is way around a blowaway frame in the GH. The Issai's are out in the cold against some chicken wire. Don't think they're doing much yet - nothing worth measuring anyway!

Last week I bought a kiwi plant or rather a pair of male and female plants sold as a pair. The soil in my garden is heavy clay and limestone. I intend to train the vine against a wall that has sun most of the day. I appreciate all the previous posts, especially from veggiechicken, and hope I don't have the same problems. My plants are about a metre high and the leaves are all brown. I don't know if both vines will be enormous or just the female. I'll just have to wait and see.

If I remember correctly, I think the males are normally more vigorous than the females, but they can also be pruned back quite hard since you don't need 1:1 male to female flowers for successful pollination. If your end goal is the fruit, it's best to give the female vine a larger share of the space.
