  • Advice on Peach Tree for Greenhouse

    Hi guys,

I'm really interested in growing a peach tree inside my greenhouse, but I'm a little stuck on which variety to choose. I'm going to use Blackmoors as I've never had any trouble with them, and they seem to provide healthy plants.

Evidently, it has to be able to exist happily inside the frame of a 8x10 greenhouse with a higher than average roof. The height the plant terminates at should be in the region of 2 metres, or easily containable within the space of an ordinary greenhouse without causing it undue harm in containment-pruning.

Out of those four, which would you pick?

    Cheers!

    Hi,

Your first decision needs to be what form you want to grow your peach.

Personally, I'm not fond of those dwarf varieties. My father bought a dwarf peach and a cherry a couple of years back, and neither did anything much - poor growth and a few bullets for fruit. Perhaps others are having more luck with them, but they are just too stunted for my liking.

On the other hand, you might not have enough room for a fan (against the end of your g/h perhaps?) or a small bushy form. I've got a couple of fans on the go, but each has a section of g/h wall 10' x 6'6", which is just about enough for a decent fan.

Choice of form will narrow your choice a bit; I suspect that the dwarfs might be your best option, but then I couldn't say anything about the variety to go for. If you don't go for the dwarf option, take care with the rootstock - IIRC that Montclare is supposed to be a bit vigorous. Perhaps restricting the roots might then be in order?

Sorry, didn't really answer your question :/

Hi JV & Thanks for your response!

Sadly I don't think we've got enough room for a fan (we're really trying to fill the greenhouse with as many different things as possible so as to get value-for-money). It's a shame about the dwarfs not being particularly fantastical croppers, yet your response about Montclare rootstock matches up to what I've previously read about it on other forums. It seems a little too vigorous for my particular needs.

I think I'll go for Amber, the dwarf variety. Thanks for the help though.

      All the best,
      GC.
