  • New redcurrant bushes

I have 4 Rovada redcurrant bushes which I planted last autumn. They have grown really well, but have no signs of any fruit yet !
Am i being too impatient? or are they not going to fruit this year ?
    any advice welcome

Hi Anny, welcome to the Vine. Whereabouts are you? If your redcurrants haven't flowered yet then they will not bear fruit this year. Hopefully next year you will have a good crop.

Thanks for your reply. We are in the SE. the weather has been appalling. Too much wind and rain. Still no flowers ! So I will have to wait until next year.
At the same time we planted autumn raspberries which appear to be going to fruit !
The strawberries are doing well though. I have made 10 pots of jam !!!

I think you're impatient. Most people nowadays have an instant gratification culture and are disappointed when they find it takes a couple of years for worthwhile cropping to start.
They plants will probably start fruiting lightly to moderately next year.
The biggest crops will come in 3-4 years time, once they are established and have reached a good size.

Mine have fruited this year, the blackbirds really enjoyed the ripe fruits and the green ones were just pulled off. Grrrr, don't forget the net.

My redcurrant bush has been in for 4 years and has only really produced a good volume of fruit this year.

Thank you for all your replys.
I am sure I am being too impatient. We are new to GYO and are learning as we go.
They have grown so well, I was wondering why they hadnt fruited. I will now have to learn how to prune them correctly and wait for the fruit perhaps next year.
We have had a good crop of strawberries and rhubarb. My raspberries are looking good too-so there is hope !!!
This forum is so good for advice. It was hard to find advice in any books on redcurrants.

                  Thank you, will do that.
As well as being new to GYO my computer skills are limited so I apologise if I get it wrong.
I am sure i will be asking for plenty more advice in the future

I agree, my raspberry canes are a full on thick hedge this year and the currants are dripping in strings. This year is our second full year on our allotment.Third year of planting.
