I am really not sure how I should approach the training of my fan Morello tree purchased earlier this year.
I am assuming it is about 3 years old - see pic.
I have done a little pruning already, but have been a bit late off the mark ...
I read in the instructions today that I should I should have rubbed out the shoots growing towards the fence or directly away from the fence as they appeared - and there were a few but were already too long to rub out, so I pruned these off close to the base. It then transpires this is the instruction for a "mature" cherry. Have I made a mistake? The pics I attached are after the pruning.
I understand that main leaders need pruning back by a third at end of the summer, but it's how I prune/train the remaining side shoots to make a nice shape tree I am unclear about, and how I should treat the main leader at the top of the tree.
If anyone has any advice or can point me to a good website or book I would be much appreciated. Many thanks.
