What does it look like when you cut into it? If it is a single stone then it is a drupe, (plum family) or if it has several pips it is in the apple family - crab apple!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

There is a similar tree in the local park. Same colour, same leaf shape and a single stone/pip.

Well- whatever it is DON'T eat it until you are sure what it is!!!!

...sounds like it's of the plum/cherry/sloe/bulace family to me though.

Is the tree in your garden Ferrad, or growing in a local park or hedgerow?

It's in our garden (if you can call it that), completely stifled by ivy growing all around it, perhaps that's why the leaves look so sad. It's very tall (15 m) and thin. This fruit grows around the top (ie. can't pick it) and drops down onto the slasto.

Thanks Farmer Gyles, it looks like the cherry plum on your web page, however the fruit there is slightly larger than a 50p piece. This fruit is smaller, about the size of a 2p piece.

                      Slasto?

Whereabouts are you? I didn't think cherry plums are ripe yet [far from it] in the UK

Welcome to the Forum, Ferrad! It would help us if you put your location in your profile. There is no ripe fruit like that where I live so maybe you're further South!

                            Hi, North Oxford.
The fruit is not yet ripe, although lots drop on the ground.

slasto, ie. paved stone normally found around swimming pools... just checked online and it is a South African brand name! I am South African and thought it was a standard term...
