Best thing to do is cut down the brown canes as soon as they've finished fruiting. The green ones have probably grown this year and should fruit next year, but they will start going brown through the summer and it does get confusing. Did you cut any canes down last year?

My Joan J (autumn variety) fruits on the old stems, if I forget to chop them down, but it means less fruit on the new stems that ahve grown this year.

The only thing you can say is.....cut all stems down after they've fruited and leave everything else alone. A simple rule that suits summer and autumn varieties. If you think you may confuse the stems, tie a piece of string to the fruiting ones

I've thought this and this is beautifully and succinctly put. Puts all the "books" to shame.

Or leave them all and just let them keep going and cut them out when they're definitely dead.

That way you get less and less smaller fuit each year til you cut your losses and dig them out - a waste surely?

So far it's given me some amazing fruit.
The stems know what they want to do - and when I am sure the old ones are dead I take them out.

If they stop producing a decent amount of fruit then I'd have to perhaps rethink my method. I couldn't jam it all last year there was so much and I ran out of freezer space.
