  • Pruning Of Currants

I know that with blackcurrants you are supposed to prune by a third each year, but does anyone do this and if not do you see any reduction in yearly harvest or increase of disease?
Same with redcurrants and whitecurrants, should I summer (don't laugh) prune as suggested and if so, how? Do you take out old wood ?

    Thanks in advance...

I cut out every fruiting stem (right now, when they're ripe for picking anyway).

I had a poor harvest last year, but loads this year (more stems, more fruit )

Oh, and I also stick the cut stems in a spare bit of ground to make more bushes

Ooh I like that idea, is that on all currants, irrespective of colour?

Redcurrants are pruned the same as goosgogs but blackcurrants aren't and you need to encourage them to throw up more stems. Cut out old ie gone dark stems every three years . If in doubt less is more .....
