  • Show us your Blueberries!

The squirrels have discovered mine so here are some photos taken before they are netted. They're just starting to ripen and have more berries this year than previously so I'm hopeful

I've noticed only two on one of my bushes. Massive ones though, must pop out and pick them before the birds gets at them.

OH Yum!!! Wish I'd brought mine with. Hopefully our tenant in Hampshire is enjoying them and the dozen or so fruit trees we planted before moving. Way to go you lot for getting any before the birds do!

We've had an excellent year for blueberries this year - I think my bushes are 4 years old, so they're really coming into heavy cropping now.

Have just been out, munched my way through a handful, and have brought a cup full in for breakfast in the morning

ETA - that's on top of the bush being stripped once already by pigeons and blackbirds.

My 3 bushes are much the same as yours VC
Best year yet- and they are 6 yrs old!

Me thinks mine have been planted too close to a hazel tree....out of excessive sun/heat but clearly not getting enough water....until this year!
They will be moved in the Autumn.

All my ripe ones are currently residing inside my son I'm afraid so I can't take a pic.

Mine have been in that spot for 2 years and were in pots for 2 years previously. There's a 3rd small one in the photo and I have another one, from Lidl last year - that has a few berries but is a tiny little bush.
Its not the sunniest spot in the garden but I want to grow them as a "hedge".

I have seven different plants. Duke, Darrow, Brigitta Blue, Elizabeth, Sunshine Blue, Bluecrop and an unknown variety.
Tastewise, there is quite some difference. 'Sunshine Blue' simple plays in a league of its own. The plant stays smaller and is a bit less hardy (no fruit this year).
Next is 'Elizabeth', which also deliver fruit of excellent quality. The other plants are comparable (and OK).

Chris, you pick those berries rather early, no?

Mine are still in pots awaiting their special bed in the fruit cage. Might just have to go out and chuck an old net curtain over them .....squirrel seems to be more interested in my apples

Hello, I would like to try blueberries on my allotment and seeing this thread has made me determind to have a go. Have you all made ericaceous beds for them and which varieties go well together for pollination?

No special beds for mine and the varieties I don't remember - they were bought halfprice at the end of the season. At least one is Bluecrop.

A couple weren't ripe underneath, they fell off when I was picking them! Waste not want not - they all taste the same in porridge

Mine are in large pots now, and really thriving.. I plan to keep them pruned to a reasonable size, but they also look great in autumn/winter when their leaves are red
