  • The case of mistaken identity

Noticed my "raspberry" bush had lots of, what I thought were ripe, fruit on them.
Went out to pick them the other day and found out they weren't as ripe as I though. On further inspection I discovered that a few of the fruit actually were ripe and were a much darker colour.

So what I thought was a raspberry bush turned out to be blackberries instead. Where I mixed up was when I bought both a raspberry bush and blackberry bush and planted them side by side in the front garden. One of them died due to overzealous hosepipe pressure which snapped the thing in half.

I brought the surviving one into the back garden (thinking it was raspberry) and planted it. 2 years later, I feel silly.

Blackberries are just that - BLACK - when ripe. If yours is dark red it could be a raspberry, loganberry or tayberry.

Nope, similar shape but a lot darker in colour. The tag it came with defiantly said blackberry, before they got mixed up that is

Pictures of unripe fruit would do just as well! Is it thorny?

Nope, no thorns. What's another reason why I believed it was maybe a raspberry bush. The thing grows like mad around this time of year though.

Here are 2 photos of my Thornless blackberry - and these are the ripest fruit!
The last photo is the very thorny Loganberry - you can get thornless versions of this too.

Ah, You sneaked a photo in while I was in the garden with a camera!! They definitely look as black as a black-berried black thingy! Very early ripening - you lucky thing!!
Here are a few varieties to see if the names ring any bells Blackberries - Chris Bowers and Sons.

Ah got no idea, no elephant memory here
All I can remember is they came from a supermarket, was either Morrisons or Aldi

They are quite big though, at least double the size of a "standard" Blackberry

I'll look out for them on offer next time and treat myself! Enjoy them - and tip root them, then you'll have lots more

They look yummy! Mine have gone mad here (8 foot and still growing) so hoping the fruit will get around to ripening at some point! *wants some blackberries now*
