Climbing fruit that won't attract wasps?

I know this will possibly be quite contradictory, but I was wondering if there are any decent climbing fruits that can be trained over a pergola that won't attract lots of wasps to the fruit?

The reason being I very much want to make the most of any space I have and want to put a pergola up at the back of my garden covering a paved seating and eating area but I don't want it to help attract the already nuisance of British summers whilst eating outside of wasps.

Maybe kiwi fruit? With the warning that the more usual varieties need male and female plants to set fruit and can be rampant whoppers - I have three down a fifty foot pergola and they cover it and an area ten feet wide if I'd let them. On a parallel pergola I'm trying a self-fertile Issai hardy kiwi and wisteria but they haven't been there long enough to tell if they'll be as vigorous. No wasp problems though and good for shade in normal summers.

Wasps only seem to go for ripe fruit, so keep it well picked and you should be ok. Just grow grapes, and pick them when they are ready. Sorted.

what about trying to be different,grow some climbing squashes and gourds,there are many shapes and sizes,and you could add a few ornamental types,which can be dried when ripe, and used as a table display,last year i took 40+ to a friends florists and at 50p each,they were gone in the weekend,so she did alright on that,but they were surplus from a cheap packet of seeds,but gave loads of strange colours and shapes....but dont mix them up..the yellow pancake ones do very well up here, and taste good so you shouldnt have any problems,i know,as i lived in your area for 7/8 years ,good luck with whatever you decide...

That's what I was going to say, although I've been chased up and down a carpark by a persistent wasp that was after my apple: he still chased me after I'd thrown it away

... also, hang some wasp traps




I'm waiting for miniature ones that I can wear as earrings

I haven't noticed wasps around my grape at all.

I didn't mean they went for ripe grapes - I meant they go for ripe fruit in general.

However a grape is a good thing to grow, ripens in this country, looks good and grows in poor soil with no need for any feed at all. In fact a good prune twice a year and it's pretty much good to go.
