Grafting tape

Hello people. Does any one know where l can buying grafting tape in Sherfield.

I've never been able to find any in the 'usual garden centres'. I think it will have to be an 'online job'.

I've tried video tape, electrical tape even some tape I aquired after having a blood test. Nothing has worked (that's what I'm putting my failure to succesfully graft down to).

My preferred tape is "Parafilm".
But clingfilm, electricians tape, PTFE tape and a variety of other slightly stretchable tapes will work.

The main reason for graft failure is poor-contact between the layer just under the bark (the greenish bit called the cambium). Or the graft not being given long enough to heal. Or the grafting done at the wrong time.

Sometimes grafts don't "take" through bad luck.

Those scions that "take" best tend to be the ones taken from the strongest-growing young shoots (i.e. scion wood from a shoot which grew at least 1ft the previous season). Scions from older wood, slow-growing shoots or cankered trees often don't "take" well.

The rootstock also needs to be bursting with vigour too - good compost or feeding.

I've only been grafting for three years and learnt much from a great series of videos on you tube by a bearded GP grower in Hampshire. He used cut lengths of polythene freezer bags. Hence, I've used cut down lengths (around 60-80cm , and 1.5 cm width) of large polythene bags eversince, with a 90% success rate. The advantages of this material are (a) cheapness, (b) stretchiness allowing tight binding and ease of final tie off. It also cuts off nicely when the time comes to remove the tape.

I vote parafilm too! It's soooo easy and binds tightly bud allows for some accomidating stretchyness.
