  • What's up with my Plum Tree?

    Hi guys,

I've got a spot of bother with my Plum tree (image link below). It looks to my eye, almost as if it's dying, or succumbed to a serious scab infection? It certainly doesn't look as healthy as it did back in April/May time. Back then, it put on a good 6-10 inches of growth on all branches, but (and this is where I think it's scab?) it rained, rained and rained again to the extent that the leaves began to fall off due to the 'browning' captured below.

It is in a pot, yes, but don't worry, it's received sufficient drainage, it's never been waterlogged, nor under-watered and has been given an initial (when it was first planted) Fish, Blood & Bone fertiliser, just to help it take hold.

The roots were quite happy, fitting well within the container as well.

Apparently, the image is too large to fit on these forums, so here's the link to the album: Plum Issues pictures by Garden_Chris - Photobucket

Hopefully that works and is accessible

    Thanks,
    GC.

It won't be scab as plums don't suffer from it.
But it might be some other fungal disease associated with the wet - perhaps even some dieback due to canker - or it might be too much fertiliser.

    Could it have been over-fertilised?
    Are whole shoots dying back?

It certainly hasn't been over fertilized, just the once around 6-7 months ago.
Some shoots have lost their leaves, but they are certainly still alive - the branches are still alive and green in colour after a scratch test. It looks as if the trees grown well, then had dreadful weather and dropped it's leaves for some reason.
It's certainly happy enough, the leaves on the photo are still there after 3 months, just the growth on certain branches have just dropped its leaves, whilst others haven't.

My Amenchalier has the same thing - I removed all the fungal damaged leaves and a few others are getting but I'm hoping that it recovers next year. In fact, my plum lost all it's leaves a few weeks ago, but it has new shoots at the ends of the branches so again, I'm hoping for a better year next year.
