  • Just planted a grapevine but I've broken off the tip

I bought a grapevine a couple of weeks and finally got around to planting it yesterday. The roots are outside the polytunnel whilst the vine is inside, unfortunately I've snapped off approx 6 inches. Will the poor thing recover or have my clumsy sausage fingers sealed it's fate?

It doesn't matter how hard I cut mine back, it still bounces back - so I wouldnt worry. In fact, I'd count it as a blessing and try to root the bit that has been snapped off! Maybe next year you'll have 2 vines

As long as it's only green growth you've broken off you haven't got a problem, I prune yards off mine every summer or I wouldn't get through the greenhouse door.

As others have stated, it's not really an issue - especially when the plants probably heading towards dormancy anyway. Depending upon the weather and heat we experience until mid-October, you might see some small shoots grow from 'joints' (I.e. in-between the leaf joint to the main stem), but more than likely, you'll be pruning them back in February as you'll want to encourage a strong central stem.

Out of interest, which variety is it - and why did you pick it?

The variety is Pinot Noir - no particular reason for choosing it other than the fact is was in the clearance section at Homebase and I can't resist a bargain.
