  • Elderberry pruning/found elderberry!

Hi, my elderly neighbour behind our house has just called me over to ask if we can 'get rid of' or prune the elderberry thats in our garden & overhangs hers....
    1. Weve not lived here long & i didnt know it was hidden behind the tree at the bottom of the garden so now im excited :0)
    2. I have no idea how to care for elderberrys. Can anyone help? She ideally would like it pruned asap as she lives on her own & has just swpt up 2buckets worth of leaves & berries! How & when should we do it?
    3. What can i make from the berries? Now ive found it i want to use it! (havent noticed it before now as was pregnant when moved & now have tiny baby so dont get to go exploring in our garden yet)

    Any help would be appreciated.

The berries may be a bit "past it" by now, but you can use them for wine, jam, etc.

As for pruning, go have a look at your tree and use a pruning saw to cut off the branches that are overhanging your neighbour's garden.

Cut right back to a joint or the the trunk though, don't just hack bits off the ends of branches like my neighbour's just done with his shrubs. Looks awful it does, and will look even worse when those stumps die back
