  • Pruning red and black currants

Is it too late to prune and how far back should I go?

    Hello
I think its too late isn't it? I think you're supposed to do it when they are dormant early spring, I expect they are waking up now and getting ready to produce fruit. Altho I am sure more experienced grapes be along to agree/dissagree.

My black currants have flowers on - you would lose this year's crop if you prune now.

        Hi there

I usually wait until I have picked all the blackcurrents. I have three blackcurrent bushes and prune one bush by about 1/3 cutting off old branches to the ground to allow new shhots to appear. The other two I prune but not as hard. So each bush gets a 1/3 prunning every three years.
this allows it to beef up again and at the same time not reduce my whole blackcurrant crop too much

As you say belvedere, prune blackcurrants in late summer/autumn after they have fruited. You can then stick the prunings in a slit in the soil filled with sand and by the spring you should have some new plants to replace old plants or give away to friends.

          Welcome to the vine btw!

I have fruit forming on my red currants already!

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
