Wooohoooo Apple trees have arrived!

Woohoooo first order of Apple trees have arrived, thanks Deacons

Ordered back in apple, arrived today and heeled in this evening and given a very thorough soaking (and in already wet soil) as a temporary home until I finish knocking my concrete path out and fill it with the 5 tons of top soil I have piled up on my drive waiting.

2x Kingston Black
2x Tom Putt
2x Cox's Orange Pippin
1x Dabinett
1x Worcester Pearmain

With 2 Rubinettes, and 2 pitmaston pineapple coming in a week or so.

Some of the trees may struggle, but willing to give them all a go and see how I get on. Can't wait!

Bare-root?
At this time of year?

Most apple trees will still have leaves on (especially further South).......unless the nursery stripped the leaves off by running their hand down the stem.

Have to say I had acouple of apple trees from Deacons, and one is very poor indeed...they werent a patch on Blackmoor for quality/packaging and service...

Yup they are bare root. One or two have the odd leaf but certainly not many.

I'll see how they go - if they don't take very well I'll contact Deacons and order from Blackmoor.

Good choice, Duncan, 5 Somerset apples including one from our area.

Rubinette - a good choice, can be a bit temperamental but apart from Cox nothing else gets close for flavour IMHO.

Co-incidently I have been researching Surrey heritage varieties, and I'm currently waiting for pricing back from Brogdale farm. If all goes to plan I'll purchase one of each heritage variety (mainly cookers) at my newly acquired allotment. I'll confirm the exact types tomorrow but I'm so excited

I also think that its a bit early yet to be having bare rooted trees. I've got 55 various cider apples on order but don't anticipate having them delivered until after Christmas.

I'm trying to remember which trees I've actually ordered, its a while ago since the order was placed. I've got Somerset Redstreak x 10and Browns Apple x 10 as the bulk of my order but also have the following varieties down:-

Sops in Wine x1
Slack ma Girdle x1
Tom Putt x 10
Major x 10
Brown Snout. x 10

All names to conjour with, only time will tell if they are any good.

Wow that's fantastic value at £7 a tree! (assuming they are all healthy). I am very envious!

I just received my two rubinettes and pitmaston pineapples today. I've heeled them in pending the finishing of the area this weekend and trellis installation then I'll plant them up and prune later in the winter to train along wires.
