Roses for hips

I have been considering growing a couple of roses primarily for the rose-hips. Not being a big fan of roses, I have no knowledge of them, except the ones my dad and nan had in their gardens for colour and scent, all I remember is getting stuck on the thorns and getting told off for getting stuck

Would anyone be able to advise which would be good varieties and maybe where from would be helpful too.
My preference would be ones that dont get massively big and need lots of pruning and care, a nice scent would be a plus but not essential, dont need a massive crop, just enough for a few recipes each winter.
Would any old rose give a crop of hips or do you have to get special ones.

The hips along the hedgerow are of the wild dog rose. The flower is a little nondescript but a nice flush of colour in the countryside. Any reason why a stroll in the country won't provide all the hips you need?

Its a possibility, they used to be all over the place, but I havent seen any nearby in recent years, none that are accessible anyway, also I tend not to travel too much nowadays without a specific destination. (but thats a story for another day maybe.)
Which is why I was thinking of growing a couple myself.

i would recommend Rosa Rugosa in white or pink for heady scent and fat glorious hips. They are the best ones for making rosehip syrup. The dog rose, as mentioned above is also a hipped rose. There are many, but the fattest hips are on the rugosa IMHO.

Aldi and/or Lidl usually sell it in hedging packs and I know Aldi had it recently. A quick scan shows Aldi having more hedging packs soon but they are not doing rugosa in their rosa hedging packs. They are, however, stocking the dog rose.

Round here all the housing estates that they've built over the last 20 or so years have been rather conveniently accompanied by native hedging ie rose, haw, blackthorne etc - very handy and worth looking out for. Personally I didn't notice them for years but as soon as I did I've seen then everywhere.
