Yet another Blueberry question!!

Two years ago I planted two blueberries, big hole and ericaceous compost. However the ground drains too quickly for them so I thought that I would create a 'sad and boggy' place. I have started a trench about 60cm wide and a spit deep which I intend to line with black plastic with some holes in so it will hold some water. I don't want to grow them in pots.

Now as to filling it. I have just had a lorry load of wood chip delivered which is pine. It is at least two years old and some of it has broken down to black and crumbly. Can I use this mixed with some ericaceous fertlizer? It would save having to buy the stuff 'cos I'm going to need loads.

Pine wood chip should be very acidic.. ideal.

Thanks. How much fertilizer would you suggest adding to a barrow load of compost?

No one seems to know!! How about a good handful to a barrow load or would this be too much?

Frankly I would add very little.. Blueberries seem to grow slowly . Most of their needs could be met by a handful of bonemeal each year.

(I have to say I am no expert although I have 7 bushes straight in the garden.. The birds love them :-(

Thanks, perhaps I will add just a little to the actual planting hole. Got to get sifting as soon as it is dry enough. 6 cubic metres aint 'alf a lot!!!!!

I would say yes very much so. Throw lots into your planting hole and mix in with soil. Add more on top as a mulch in spring.
