How long will my cherry tree look dead?

Last year was bad year for cherries. The late frosts we had, coupled with the wet weather really knocked them. So your Cherry may have suffered due to this.

Ok so the plan is to inspect my cherry tree at the next chance I get, scrape a bit bark off and if it looks dead howk it out and scratch bark off the tree's in the shop's till I find one that's green underneath and possibly got buds forming. Will do.

I bought a cherry tree 'Stella' last year, maybe about August, it looked dead the day I bought it and it still looks dead now. .

I'm with the others - it's likely to be an 'ex-parrot'.

I've had very mixed results buying trees from major chainstores, particularly those that are sold at a knock down price during the summer, or during 'sales'. Apart from the fact they are often neglected and have been dried out for too long (dead roots), labels get lost and can be reattached wrongly, or simply be plain wrong (almost as bad as some professional tree nurseries I've ordered from). For example, three years ago I bought what was labelled as two Victoria plums and one Opal plum, in pots, from Focus, at £5-99 each, and they all turned out to be Opals.

Consider yourself lucky! I took pity on an Opal at Focus and bought it, only to find two years later that it was the rootstock - the nursery had cut the graft off instead.

Now you come to say this, that may be the case with my 'three Opals', they've not produced a single plum yet - growing like stink though! I'm going to have a closer look at them tomorrow. Focus went bust didn't they. I wonder if it was a result of graft removal.

Naw it was cos a lot of numpty's worked there ........including the one who gave a shed away .

Ok so it's taken me a little while but I've been out to inspect cherry tree today and it's well and truly dead. I think I'll try and grow one from seed before I buy another one. Thanks for the help though.

Someone who knows better than me will be along shortly but from a cherry stone you must be talking years and years before you get fruit. Also you have no control over variety and ultimate size. Still time to plant a bare rooted one from a reputable supplier. I had a newsletter from Ken Muir this week with discounts. Didn't look for cherry especially but they may do them. Basically you could spend years growing and still be disappointed.
