I've just been reading about mosaic planting - different varieties of apples on different rootstock in a planting planned to confuse the natural enemies.
It made me wonder about labelling.
My new trees are named on the support posts, in indelible pencil or waterproof marker but they have to be rewritten every spring as the writing disappears over the winter. I have a master chart worked out on a spreadsheet that gives me the information.
The family orchard planting was known to my grandfather but all that information evaporated when he had a stroke - it has taken many years to identify no more than three quarters of the old trees. I've replaced twenty of them and I carry in my head the knowledge of which varieties I've planted . . . .
It could be done better.
What's the best way of permanently naming fruit trees, that will last for decades?
