Well I have just purchased that Aldi one and it's cheap for three. I don't know if red goosegogs will be everyone's thing yet, so we will see how these go.

Oh, and forget 8oz of fruit. It'll take 12. Especially if you make a bit extra crumble topping (eg, 90/60/60 instead of 75/50/50). Trust me, I've made this one a lot.Last edited by mrbadexample; 11-02-2013, 07:33 PM.Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made

Gooseberry - Ribes uva-crispa 'Whinham's Industry'
It's one of Monty Don's favourite fruits. Hoping for a decent enough crop this to year to make something from it.

I got a couple of supposedly green gooseberry bushes (can't remember the variety) from Lidl a few years ago and a more expensive Hinnoken Red from the garden centre. Now that they're all producing I've found out that they are all red and to be honest taste exactly the same - surprisingly sweet when ripe and not like the ones we used to grow at my parents' house when I was a kid. For jams and jellies I prefer them a bit underripe and have never round any need for jam sugar as they're high in pectin. Always make some gooseberry and strawberry jam (you need to cook the goosegogs for long enough that the skins are soft and then they're lovely) and made some jelly last year too which I flavoured with herbs, was lovely too. Once made some gooseberry icecream which was very good but don't know where the recipe is now - think it had some elderflower cordial in it too but not sure.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
